Fall, out!

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX STAFF  |  September 22, 2009
Start the weekend with the Colecovison-on-crack sounds of MATH THE BAND on Thursday (the 24th) at AS220, with Austin’s DANIEL FRANCIS DOYLE and locals 3D MYSTERY and PEOPLE OF COLOR; and head back to Empire Street on Friday (the 25th) for a homegrown lineup of varied rock featuring ska vets SBT, punk vets TONY JONES & THE CRETIN 3, FOR THE LOVE OF SLOANE, and RUSTIC DRAMA. Call 401.831.9327. A busy Friday also includes ROUTE. 44 with NYC’s VOLUNTEERS opening at the Blackstone (401.726.2181); potent sludge-rockers THE DIEPODS descend on Jimmy’s Saloon in Newport (401.846.5121); and a heavy-hitting (and free!) rap show goes down at the Milk & Cookies Gallery in downtown Pawtucket. The Pro Town Records showcase celebrates a vinyl compilation featuring ROMEN ROK, CHACHI, DJ AL BUMS, and special guests rocking the Grant Building all night long. And start the night at the Skating Center downtown with the PROVIDENCE ROLLER DERBY ladies and the MIDNIGHT CREEPS as halftime entertainment ($12, kids under 12 half-price). The Penalty Box is the place to be Saturday (the 26th), when 75orLess Records CEO and SIX STAR GENERAL frontman Mark MacDougall unleashes a lineup including DENNIS MOST INSTIGATORS, SUICIDE BILL, THE EXTREME TERROR, and SSG ($4 at the door, 401.331.8545). On MONDAY (the 28th), Jerky’s Bar (401.621.2244) hosts THE ANTLERS and indie crooner HOLLY MIRANDA. A pair of midweek freebies: on Tuesday (the 29th), acclaimed jazz singer AMANDA CARR takes the reins with the Hi-Hat (401.453.6500) house band, and SIT DOWN BABY do their regular blues bash at Tazza Caffé (401.421.3300); and on Wednesday (the 30th), the SUPERCHIEF TRIO continue their residency at Nick-a-Nee’s with six-string guru TOM FERRARO (no cover, 401.861.7290).
