Bam Bam

Music seen at Bubba's Sulky Lounge, November 29
By CHAD CHAMBERLAIN  |  December 3, 2008

There are a few people in town who really know how to throw a party. Three of them (Jen Batchelor and Phoenix scribes Chris Gray and Ian Paige) amalgamated their powers on Saturday at Bubba's for a party to remember.

Bam Bam are our city's premier, uber-hip DJ team. Going from hip-hop to new wave to punk and then beyond, Bam Bam's playlist has thoughtfulness and consistency that anyone — hipster or not — can appreciate. During their set, the tempos and volumes of successive songs stay consistent, making transitions on the dance floor smooth and easy.

Bam Bam don't propose a technologically complex DJ performance; they keep it tastefully simple and focus mostly on their playlist. What I liked most about their set was how they left out passû transitions between tracks. They never made it feel like I was dancing at a wedding reception, the way some DJs tend to do. And with the shuffling of high heels and Chuck Taylors on Bubba's PBR-drenched light-up dance floor, I don't think Bam Bam could have ever let the mood drop.
