EYE TO THE UNKNOWN And in Tunstall's case, figuring herself out.A native of St. Andrews, Scotland, Tunstall has been garnering critical acclaim overseas for the better part of a year already for a debut on which she’s as adept on intimate ventures as on more energizing ones. “Under the Weather” evokes the feel of a toasty winter living room; “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” invigorates with its jolt of background doo-wop accents and fiery acoustic strumming. The disc, now finally available in the US, brims with attitude that never overshadows the songcraft. Many of her lyrics deal with a desire for change or uncertainty about the future. In the opening “Other Side of the World,” she sings, “She’s waiting like an iceberg/Waiting to change/But she’s cold inside/She wants to be like the water.” It’s this passion for the unknown combined with her sunny assurance that she will, one day, figure herself out that marks Eye to the Telescope as more than just a successful debut.
