Pineries
• Here's the good word: an intriguing new group called LOVERS OF FICTION caught our attention recently. Haven't heard a note yet, but the rather mongrel roster of players has us curious: JIMMY DORITY (solo, Foam Castles, Over a Cardboard Sea), MARK DENNIS (Waldos, Butcher Boy, Colorless Music), SAM CHANDLER (Theodore Treehouse), and DAN SONENBERG (Truth About Daisies and USM's current composer-in-residence). The word from Sonenberg, who fronts the thing, is that Lovers of Fiction are "poppy" and "high energy," yet still finding their genre; the band's stock is so rich that they might be interesting enough as is. Look for them to start playing out around August.

• ISOBELL, the rapturous alt-pop quintet helmed by Hannah Tarkinson and Chris McKneally, have finished mixing an album with Todd Hutchisen at Acadia this month, their first since 2008's Maproom. No word yet on the title, but they hope to have it out this summer, though fans of the sporadically surfacing pop group can get a preview at a show they play with MEGHAN YATES AND THE REVERIE MACHINE, July 7 at the Frontier Café in Brunswick.

• We doubt we're the only ones listening to PINERIES, a dynamic new trio from Lewiston (fronted by Denise Dill) playing dramatic, post-rock stuff. They've so far only been responsible for a three-song EP, the fantastic ten minutes of The Bleachery, but have been otherwise making splashes booking house shows in the second floor of a Lewiston housing co-op (which they're calling The Beat Rust). Dig a little for info on that, and visit pineries.bandcamp.com for access to the EP, probably the best $3 you'll spend all day. The band play two shows this week: a set June 22 at Guthrie's, L-A's enclave of weird, and in Portland at one of Flask Lounge's low-profile free shows Tuesday, June 26, with traveling alt-folk bands Old Country (OH) and Left & Right (VA). Quite recommended.
