John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard, the husband-and-wife duo who met in Boston on their way to Cali, are the dual force behind the Submarines, who craft gauzy, hook-friendly, persistently sunny indie pop that sometimes sounds as if it had been made to backdrop an iPhone commercial or an indie teen rom-com. And so it has, frequently. Let the denouncers cry "sell out" — we find it impossible to resist the Subs’ whimsical, catchy brand of indie pop. Their third full-length release, Love Notes/Letter Bombs (Nettwerk), sports a bit more gravity than their previous work but retains that winking buoyancy.
