Boston Accents playlist 01.22.12: George Vala, Grand Resort, Sand Reckoner, Parlour Bells, Muscle Milk!!, Yale MA, Animal Talk

Photobucket

On a Sunday where the New England Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl XLVI, we premiered new jams from Muscle Milk, Sand Reckoner, Garvy J., and DJ/producer George Vala, who led the debut of the Boston Mix Up segment. Been a long week, so I’ll let the playlist speak to the rest. See you next Sunday at 8pm, thanks for listening. Go Pats!

GRAND RESORT “Microscopic” – Busted this one out last week, and we’re still feeling it as one of the freshest new sounds to come out of Boston in late ‘11/early ’12. Grand Resort is the brainchild of 19-year-old Brookline resident Andres Pichardo, and the future seems bright.

MUSCLE MILK “I’m So Down” – Dedicated to Billy Cundiff of the Baltimore Ravens after he botched a field goal attempt and sent the Patriots to the Super Bowl. Certainly Carl and Justine didn’t have that in mind when they wrote this street-walking beast, but the track is just so… left of center (*rimshot*)

ANIMAL TALK “Can’t Dance With It” – Class of 2012 band hits the stage Thursday at T.T. The Bear’s with BrownBoot, the Blackboard Nails and the Future Everybody in a stellar bill in Central Square. Get there early for the A-Talk.

PARLOUR BELLS “Heavy Dream (Hurricane Remix by Michael J. Epstein)” – From the “Heavy Dream" remix project, which currently also features re-boots by Dan Isaacs, Johnny Anguish and others. But I’m digging this remix from MJE, he of the Memorial Library, DNFMOMD and Darling Pet Munkee. Parlour Bells headlines the Winter Rock Social this Saturday night at Radio in Somerville with Gene Dante, Eddie Japan and others. Look nice, plz.

SAND RECKONER “Morning Star” – First track off the psych rock band’s 2012 demo, which I grabbed at Great Scott a few weeks ago when they played with Quilt, CreaturoS, and New Highway Hymnal.

YALE MA “Danger City Population Me” – Check out this awesome fucking video. Yale doesn’t deserve such treatment, how dare you throw shit at them!

THE NEW HIGHWAY HYMNAL “Blackened Hands” – Gritty rock and roll band from North of Boston releasing 7-inch next month, hitting SXSW in March, then dropping an EP over the summer. One to watch

CAMDEN “(Talking On The Telephone)” – New 7-inch dropped last week from our darlings of Class of 2012, and on Thursday they hit Great Scott in Allston for a solid bill with Cooling Towers, Paper Snakes, and…

THE DAILY PRAVDA “Dead House (2012)” -- … the Pravda, who celebrate the occasion by re-recording and re-releasing this standout track from 2009’s Burning Bible Diamonds record. A personal fave; the last 2 minutes are especially fantastic.

GARVY J “Celebrate” – Most recent single from this former member of the Elevator Drops performing solo around town.

MUY CANSADO “Love And Fear” – Oh Muy Cansado, I bungled your show announcement, so I will spell it out nice and clearly here: Friday, January 27 at Radio in Somerville with the Sterns and 28 Degrees Taurus on a very excellent bill.

BUTTERKNIFE “Restless” – Featured in December’s Winter Preview in the Boston Phoenix, rising pop-rock band releases Do The Needful this Saturday at the Middle East with Guillermo Sexo, Garage Sale Picasso, and Susan Constant.

AUTOCHROME “Senses” – The countdown is on: Autochrome’s debut record drops March 30 at T. T. The Bear’s Place, on a release party bill with Soccer Mom, Young Adults, and Night Fruit, and it already promises to be one of 2012’s finest.

GHOST BOX ORCHESTRA “Vanished” – Expansive psych-rock collective also part of our Class of 2012, hitting the Rosebud in Davis Square Saturday night with Royal Wedding, Leagues, and…

THICK SHAKES “Go Back To New York” -- …these garage rock co-eds (is there a worse music journalism tag that “rock co-eds? Sorry…) Welcome back the Shakes from their winter tour with Radio Control. Here’s the Facebook invite.

GIRLFRIENDS “Big Machines” – Lead track off the Nothing Nice To Say demos, which will eventually land on a Girlfriends full-length sometime this year. They’re at O’Brien’s March 3 with CreaturoS and Cousins, from Halifax.

STREIGHT ANGULAR “Supermarche” – The Everyone Is Syncopated EP just dropped online, and the Stre'Angs will play the hits no doubt Wednesday night at Middlesex Lounge at the Cool Ranch dance party. It’s also Evan Bodega Girls’ birthday. Get into it.

HOORAY FOR EARTH “Sails” – Dipping into the NYC scene and wishing still that the half of Hooray For Earth that lives in the Dirty Apple will come home to Boston/Cambridge so we can claim HFE as our own once again.

ANDRE OBIN “Gazelle” – Off the 2010 Frontrunner record, Obin has several releases planned in 2012 on a variety of labels.

GENTLEMEN HALL “All Our Love” – Exploding band had a good few weeks capped off by the debut of this track’s music video on Tuesday.

ROGUEWAVES “Ruins” – Throwback electro banger from 2008 or so, featuring JustinCredible and Zak Broman of Roguewaves, Isom Innis (Foster the People, Southern Belle) on production and Keely Bumford (Black Kettle) on vocals. Just a great, great song. Grab the mp3 on my old pre-Phoenix blog, Vanyaland.

GLASS TEETH “Dead Dreamer” – The dark disco maven of our Class of 2012 feature.

ADVENTURE SET “Paler Faces” – Synthpop band back in action, thought of this after seeing a stack of AdSet CDs stacked on a counter at the Magic Room Gallery last night. Grab one next time you’re in the room -- which should be this Saturday when the band performs live in the Brighton arts space.

GEORGE VALA “Somebody That I Used To Know (Gotye Re-edit)” – Closing the show with the launch of Boston Mix Up, a new segment where we take a Boston producer/DJ’s remix of a national track, and we’re kicking it off in stale, as Vala’s house edit is one of the best Gotye remixes to emerge so far. Snag it before you gotta pay for it.
