MORE ABOUT 27

27 is a hushed and intense guitar, vocal and experimental sample based band. The band has shared bills with artists such as Low, Karate, Donkey, The in/out, Clem Snide, Six Going on Seven, Secret Stars, Tara Jane O'Neil, Damon and Naomi, and The Mad Scene. 27 is Ayal Naor, Maria Christopher, and Neil Coulon. Ayal was a member of several heavy art/noise bands including Taang! recording artists Spore. Maria was in the melodic noise band and Sony recording artists Dirt Merchants. Neil is a multi-instrumentalist contributing everything from clarinet & piano to drums and other percussion

In the Spring of 1999, 27 released their first CD entitled Songs From the Edge of the Wing (Reproductive Records). One song was tracked at a friend's 24 track studio. The remaining were self-recorded with the band's home recording equipment, either at their rehearsal space or at a band member's apartment. All recordings were mixed by the band on their home computer. Songs From the Edge of the Wing was received quite favorably, including reviews in the Boston Phoenix, Northeast Performer Magazine, The Noise, and the on line music review website listen.com. Songs was recently re-released by Release Entertainment/Relapse Records. Also, a 7" picture disc from 27 has been newly released by Kimchee Records.

Songs from the Edge of the Wing was followed up by Animal Life, released on Kimchee at the end of 2001, which was described by Brainwashed.com as the band's "first masterpiece." According to Ayal Noar, "I still like heavy music, but I played it for a lot of years and feel that I got out what I had to say. When I see bands doing heavy music these days, I get the feeling that it’s all been done. Bands think that it makes them intense if they turn their guitars up, and it doesn’t." 27 just finished a mini-tour of the Midwest that ended in Boston on the 19th of December.
