MORE ABOUT PORN THEATRE USHERS

As underground hip hop re-emerged worldwide in creating innovative party music in the mid-90’s, the scope of the hip hop audience and its participants grew exponentially. As hip hop crossed racial barriers and more of its fans became participants, the doors were open to increased experimentation helping groups like the Boston-based, Porn Theatre Ushers to quickly become both a novel and stylistic success. Born in the depths of a dusty Charlestown warehouse, the eclectic sampling and solid production work of “Mister” Jason Katsohis, hooked up with the notoriously foul-mouthed and sharp-witted lyricist, Mike Destefano (Nabo Rawk), to form Porn Theatre Ushers, a comic-book style, indie project utilizing both a sense of humor and credible skills. Their contrasting musical contributions rooted in quality, insults and good-yucks would go on to create a solid, house-party soundtrack, and become one of Boston’s most important hip hop acts.Having been one of New Hampshire’s few notable hip hop enthusiasts at the time, Mister Jason had spent significant time and energy researching and collecting the vinyl artifacts of a culture next to invisible in the granite state and soon started performing as a DJ and as part of UNH hip hop crew, Falsehood. A few years and many Heinekens later, Mister Jason has established himself as both a respected free agent; having collaborated on releases with nearly a dozen peers and mentors (MF Doom, Schizofreniks, Louis Logic, Infinite Styles, etc.) as well as a dedicated advocate for establishing an authentic hip-hop scene in the often overlooked city.Nabo Rawk, self-taught in the likes of graffiti art-meets-finger painting after running out of ritalin and rhythmic shite-talking, brings an unpredictable energy to the stage, maintaining the audiences’ attention with clever insults and surrealist verbal imagery. Ever encouraging audience participation, he rarely shies away from a freestyle battle or a chance to dismiss a fat chick. It’s not unusual to see a crew of ten mc’s on stage by the end of a PTU set, all jockeying for position as the biggest wise ass. Nabo Rawk’s dedication to maintaining an original party flow and pushing the audiences’ buttons is evidenced in his ability to utilize insults so odd you can’t help but bust a gut laughing, a stint with local group, The Massholes, illustrating some of PTU’s cover art and a penchant for being obscurely offensive.PTU’s first 12 inch featuring the underground classic, “Me & Him” quickly gained the attention of heads from coast to coast. The single even made an appearance on Mix Master Mike’s Spin Psycle mix CD, helping PTU gain international exposure. Their second release, Sloppy Seconds, (Biscuithead), met with immediate success in both the underground hip hop and indie rock scenes. The album featured a double vinyl format, the second being instrumentals of the songs on the album, providing a DJ tool for their fans and encouraging fans to be participants in the music rather than mere observers. Soon enough, PTU were requested regularly on local alternative radio station WFNX and asked to perform at the 2003 Vans Tour. Their debut LP Taxachusetts, (Detonator Records), due out in July, already has fans waiting with baited breath for the party to start again. Featuring guest appearances by local favorites, Edan, Esoteric, K-No Supreme and featuring a remix by DJ Frank White, their newest release is sure to earn plenty of wear and tear on the 1200’s.
