RED CROSS SKY checked in this week to say they’re working hard on a new full-length CD in drummer WILLIAM BRUNER’s studio. Look for a first single, “Riders of the Heart,” to be released on their MySpace page any day now. In case you can’t wait, the band have also re-released their debut self-titled EP to Bull Moose. Anybody catch their January 25 appearance at the Battle of the Bands? They went on first and eventually lost out to PROVOCATE, a Pantera-loving metal band that have been making noise lately.
ROY DAVIS has a band (THE DREGS, featuring JEFF BEAM on guitar, not brother CALVIN GOODALE, BERNIE NYE on bass, and old JEREMIAH FREED drummer KERRY RYAN) and a date, April 8, for the release of Deadweight, a much-anticipated follow-up to last year’s Grey Town. Early returns say the disc gets a little more rocking, but doesn’t abandon any of the great alt-country/roots influences. Look for a big CD-release show with CASSAVETTES and EZRA FURMAN & THE HARPOONS.
The word is TWISTED ROOTS did Portland proud with its opening slot at the Cumberland County Civic Center January 31. OZZY ain’t got nothing on PETE GIORDANO.
Bad news arrived in the “Sibilance” staff e-mail box this week: COSADES have decided to disband, going out with a final burn at the Big Easy, February 14, with the SEA CAPTAINS (the new ADAM FLAHERTY project) opening. After the tantalizing EP Rhymes with Orange and two terrific albums, A Lack of Heroine and Tusks and a Mustache, Cosades leave a legacy of superior songwriting and stage performance, driven largely by frontman KYLE GERVAIS, who also did time in GLORY TRAP and THE CHECK. Part of the band’s problem was a lack of consistency in the drummer’s chair — AWESOME/DARO drummer DJ MOORE fills in on the 14th.
