Review: Tangled

This is Disney, all right

Disney's 50th animated film, a very loose adaptation of "Rapunzel," is less a Grimm take than a tangled twist on the fairy tale. Byron Howard, co-director of Bolt, is joined by first-timer Nathan Greno, and together they've woven a 3D, computer-animated musical that strains to imbue the production with the design sensibilities of one of the studio's hand-animated 2D classics. Even composer Alan Menken fails to attain the magical heights he and his late music partner, lyricist Howard Ashman, reached in Beauty and the Beast. The original story's prince has become Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi, TV's Chuck), a dashing thief who's knocked out by tower-dwelling shut-in Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), or at least by her trusty frying pan. Oh, and in this version, Rapunzel is a golden-tressed princess. Yup, this is Disney, all right.
