Review: The Virginity Hit

In which high school kids act like high school kids

An awkward teen (Matt Bennett) struggles to achieve the hallowed devirginized status of his peers. Shallow high jinks and alcohol-induced misunderstandings ensue. Sound familiar? But unlike that one where the kid fucks a pie, this mockumentary from Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland doesn’t pander to clichés. There’s no suave dork or sensitive jock. Rather, the high-school kids act like high-school kids — relentlessly immature and all the better for it. The film is loaded with unknown newcomers (all using their real names), and it’s shot in the shaky-handheld first-person style, under the pretense that these home videos are destined for the laptop screen, not the silver one. This establishes a realistic groundwork, and the lunacy gets ratcheted up with each of Matt’s failed attempts, eventually boiling over at a surprisingly feel-good climax involving porn star Sunny Leone.

A knife-wielding maniac plots his exploits off of a popular slasher film.   If you were to call out Joseph Kahn for unabashedly ripping this plot straight from Scream 2 , he'd probably take it as a compliment.

"Like in 10 years, this is Lollapalooza— we're just ahead of shit," said Nick Hook of Cubic Zirconia on Saturday night, toward the tail end of his solo set during SBTRKT's collaborative shindig with burgeoning UK-label Young Turks.

Believe it or not, there still exist some pockets of the globe where dubstep remains sacred, with champions of purism deflecting the ever-tainting mainstream intrusions.

If there was a broken-record knock against electronic music in the last decade, it's that it all sounded the same.

Without much that can be considered "structure" in terms of the verse-chorus-verse standard, Q confidently wobbles through an album's worth of jaded bangers.
