Game Unicon + Pi-Con 2009
Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel & Convention Center
The dregs of August are a fine time indeed for hardcore slacking and low-key road-tripping — so bring on the off-the-beaten-path gaming conventions! Let’s start with Game Unicon. Billed as the “largest video-game convention in the history of New England,” this fragstravaganza put on by Framingham shop Game Universe features more than 30 cash-prize tournaments (from Tetris to Halo 3), a humongous dealers’ row, and a concert with Harmonix superstars Bang Camaro and Freezepop, plus Powerglove, the Konami Kode, the Megas, and Jesus Candy. That’s all at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel & Convention Center, 181 Boston Post Road West, Marlborough | August 21-23 | $30-$40 | 508.370.4263 or //www.gameunicon.com.
Those who prefer to bury their noses in a D&D manual, on the other hand, should set a course for the Pioneer Valley. The fourth annual Pi-Con boasts LARPs and RPGs aplenty, shadow-cast screenings of Repo: The Genetic Opera and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and panels ranging from BDSM to “Steampunk 101” and the “Neuroscience of Zombies.” That’s at the Crowne Plaza Enfield-Springfield, 1 Bright Meadow Blvd, Enfield, Connecticut | August 21-23 | $25-$50 | //www.pi-con.org.
