Notes on Darkbuster, Frank Smith, and Bang Camaro

Darkbuster

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones started it with their yearly Yuletide multi-night “Hometown Throwdown,” which ended after 2002. Now DARKBUSTER have revived the tradition with their “Hometown Throwup,” which in its second year takes over the Abbey Lounge February 18-24. Darkbuster frontman Lenny Lashley admits they stole the idea: “When we played the Throwdown in ’99, it was one of the best gigs we ever got, and it was such a great event. We can’t do it on the Bosstones’ level, but we can have seven good nights with different bands on the bill.” A Weakness for Spirits (2005) is Darkbuster’s most recent album, but a comp is due this summer: Out of the Gutter: B-Sides, Unreleased & Covers. . . . JULIANA HATFIELD has plucked FRANK SMITH — Aaron Sinclair’s band — to back her in the studio for a six-song EP tentatively called Juliana Hatfield and Frank Smith, Sittin’ in a Tree. Frank Smith will then relocate to Austin, where they’ll play South by Southwest next month. They play their farewell show at Great Scott February 24. . . . The STERNS will release Sinners Stick Together (Ominirox) March 13; at the moment they’re on a national tour that comes to Great Scott February 21. . . . Ska band the Allstonians, who perform intermittently these days, return to the stage at the Second Annual Evacuation Day Extravaganza at the Middle East upstairs March 17 with folk-punkers BREAD & ROSES and DJ BENNI CHASA. . . . On the video front: BANG CAMARO’s first one is for “Push Push (Lady Lightning)”; it’s directed by Adam Moyer, who is a DP for the reality-TV show American Chopper. MySpace heard the buzz on the multi-vocalist hard-rock band and will feature them the week of the group’s CD-release party at the Paradise February 24.
