Saints, sinners, paint

What makes Laurel Sparks's paintings so delicious is her exuberant embrace of decadence. The Jamaica Plain artist's February exhibit "Pleasure Dome" at Howard Yezerski Gallery began with doodles of chandeliers and then slathered on top silver enamel, glitter, and acrylic paint in confectionery pinks and blues. It's a seductive, sugary neo-rococo abstraction in which more is more.

In the 1930s and '40s, Boston painters developed a moody, mythic realism. They mixed social satire with depictions of street scenes, Biblical scenes, and mystical symbolic narratives, all of it darkened by the shadow of the Great Depression and World War II.
Fresh fruit and vegetables
The bleakest months of New England winter are ahead of us, so the prospect of leaving your toasty house to see art may not be at the top of your to-do list.
Site-specificity
Wharf Street is quickly becoming a hotbed for the esoterically minded. Building on early pioneers such as clothier Rogues Gallery and smart seafood at Street and Company, the original waterfront is being bolstered with the recent opening of Brook There, Brook DeLorme's sustainable-clothing design studio and shop, and 37-A Gallery, opened in a conjoined space.
