Running the best museum in town is no simple task. You've got to have something for the Maine Modernism fetishists, the wide-eyed tourists with cameraphones, the stodgy septuagenarian collectors, the post-grad relational aestheticists, and the dozens of implacable critics that call Portland home. The Portland Museum of Art does all that without breaking a sweat, giving art fiends of all stripes plenty to think about. Whether we like everything or not is beside the point: this is a very special place. And that one Mary Cassatt gets us every time.
