Best Local Cause + Nice Try
Summing up the campaign for same-sex marriage in Maine, which stretched through the better part of 2009, EqualityMaine political director Matt Moonen said, “it was the best, most well-executed campaign in Maine history.” Indeed, while the other side used distractive ammunition (fear-mongering about the effects gay marriage would have on schoolchildren), the pro-equality forces focused (perhaps to their detriment) on the real issues at hand — how gay marriage would affect loving families in Maine. Phoenix readers recognize that the fight for gay marriage started long before the bill was introduced, and will last well into the future. We lost this time around, but we’re sure this cause will rise again.
