Best Hidden Wilderness
I was told that Hinckley Park was a good place to hunt for fiddlehead ferns, so I went to see for myself. I found much more than those curled, edible greeneries. Right off Highland Avenue in South Portland, there exists a labyrinthine park (it’s actually just 40 acres, but once you enter, it seems much more expansive), complete with open fields, wooded hills, two ponds, and after spring rains, enough mud to drown in. Come summer, there’s freshwater fishing, and in the winter, when fewer brave the snowy trails, it feels like your own crystalline backyard maze. While you’re certain to run into fellow explorers of both the human and canine variety (this park is a favorite among local dog-owners), Hinckley is the perfect place to go for a solo stroll of the after-work, thought-collection, or post-brunch nature.
