Best Hip-hop Venue + Best Non-gallery Art Space + Best Movie Theater (Arthouse)
At a recent (and packed and intelligent and unusual and thrilling) hip-hop show at SPACE, you couldn’t lean against the venue’s walls, because they were lined with gongs timed to go off at specific intervals as part of a sound installation by ambient superstar Greg Davis. If you were standing outside, you might have admired the final remnant of the recent “Distance Don’t Matter” exhibit by Swoon and friends, during which dozens of volunteers gave their time, scrap metal, and boxes of pasta to artists who had traveled here by plane, car, and bicycle from hundreds of miles away. You might have grabbed fliers for one of the two documentaries they screened in the surrounding week and thought, “Hey, this sounds good, and isn’t it interesting that SPACE is like the only place you can ever see a documentary in Portland aside from Videoport?” This isn’t a trifecta. It’s a Triple Crown.
