Vivid Motion’s Nutcracker Burlesque
Much to Portland’s delight, local dance company Vivid Motion brought back its biggest crowd-pleaser in 2009: the Nutcracker Burlesque, a dripping-with-sex reinterpretation of the Christmas ballet (which the company hadn’t performed since 2006). In this version, Clara gets a bit tipsy, and her drunken dreams are filled with erotic lap dances; a smokin’-hot Snow Queen and scarily sexy Drosselmeyer; scantily clad, black-lit ballerinas; hip-hop dance battles; and goth fairies performing scary, brokenly beautiful choreography. Featuring local dancers of all shapes, sizes, and skill sets, a live band, and an authentic burlesque atmosphere, 2009’s shows sold out quickly to audiences at the St. Lawrence Arts Center that were ready to hoot, holler, and get into the holiday spirit.
