Free Hugs Guy

Sometimes it can be hard, living in Portland. We're not whiners — and we can't stand 'em — but everybody needs a little understanding now and again. A little reassurance. And is some damn affirmation just plain too much to ask for? "Big Jon" has the solution.

He stands in Monument Square for hours on end — even through the winter — holding a sign reading "Free Hugs." And he doesn't get enough love. Dozens of people walk right by, some even avoiding his gaze and cheery smile. Who would pass up free love? Who would scorn honest, open human compassion? Not us, anyway.

Big Jon gives out more love than anyone we know. Anybody can come up to him — big, small, adult, kid — and get a big, friendly squeeze. He's not weird about it — it's just firm enough, there's no undercurrent of sexual tension, and he hangs on just as long as you want him to. Sometimes it's just what you need. Next time he's there, go give him a free hug of your own. You'll both feel better for it.
