Since JL Coombs moved to Exchange Street just over five years ago, the store has dramatically increased its, er, foot traffic. The store, begun in 1830 by Mr. Coombs, holds the title of oldest shoe company in the United States. Despite their age, the retail stores in Portland, Freeport, and Portsmouth always seem to be in touch with what’s new and hip. Sneakers, dress shoes, heels, flats, boots, their ever-changing selection keeps even the most frequent shopper on his or her toes.
