Bull Moose Music ’s Portland store (one of 10 in the Maine-owned chain) has a dingy, basement-style atmosphere that exudes everything that a small music store should be: it’s comfortable, hip, and strangely authentic. There is a good selection of rock, punk, and reggae music, and a small section devoted to local bands as well. Employees are friendly and knowledgeable — especially since several are also musicians. Bull Moose is far and away the best spot for local and national music, and in addition to its CDs, records, and tapes, the store sells tickets to local shows at popular venues like the Asylum and the Big Easy.
