Best Best Brewpub and Local Beer
The brews at Gritty McDuff’s were the deciding factor for both categories. The beer was termed by voters “great,” “good,” “solid,” “fresh and original,” and “always good.” Also drawing fans to the pubs (including the Auburn location, which drew its own votes, and Freeport) were the staff and the atmosphere.
One voter specifically liked “people-watching through the window” of the Fore Street location, with its view out into the Old Port’s main pedestrian route.
There’s also the classic bar on which you can rest your elbows and your feet at the same time, as you reach for yet another glass of the good stuff. Or, for real regulars, there’s the mug club, which entitles you to drink the nectar of the gods for peasants’ pennies.
Voters listed as their favorite beers nearly the entire menu, all brewed right here in Portland: the Best Bitter, Black Fly Stout, Best Brown, Halloween Ale, Pub Style pale ale, and the Scottish Ale. And the remaining two, the Vacationland Summer golden ale and the Christmas ESB are also well worth not just a mention, but a quaff, or really a sip, or perhaps a swallow, or mostly just plain guzzling.
