Sci-fi, fantasy, and Sony's new handheld
By MITCH KRPATA | December 27, 2011
After a loaded holiday season, it's only natural that game publishers are taking a breather to start the new year. Despite a quiet January, this winter gives gamers much to look forward to: long-awaited sequels, promising original franchises, and even a new handheld system.
The year's strangest title may be one of its first, when GOTHAM CITY IMPOSTORS becomes available for download on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC, on January 10. It's a first-person shooter featuring teams of ersatz Batmen and Jokers trying to blow each other's brains out. Misguided, perhaps, but it's developed by Monolith, a studio with a good track record.

- The Big Hurt: Alex James's cheese, the Chili Peppers' video, Noel and Liam's suit, Nicole Scherzinger's Killer Love, Sammy Hagar's Chickenfoot III
James is on the vanguard of a truly extraordinary future: now that cheese has been infused with the flavor of ketchup, it's only a matter of time before entire cheeseburgers — with beef, onions, lettuce, tomato, bacon, and all — are compressed into pre-sliced cheese singles so you can carry them around in your wallet.
- Shaping noise into extreme metal with Sewer Goddess
Sewer Goddess are gritty, grimy, and unpleasant listening, but a growing legion of gluttons flock to the band's audial punishment.
- Cloud Nothings | Attack on Memory

- Dr. Dog | Be the Void
With Be the Void , their sonically raw sixth album, these Philly psych-pop oddballs have pulled a fussy, self-conscious about-face, indulging in their weirdest ideas in years.
- Air | Le Voyage Dans La Lune
It was inevitable that Air would one day be asked to soundtrack a colorized version of an iconic 1902 silent French film about moon exploration, right? There's the French thing, the moon thing, the kitsch-cool factor.

- Review: Fright Night
Set in the sun-bleached city of sin, Las Vegas — where many of the strip's denizens are already dead inside — Fright Night plays upon elements of darkness and indulgence.
- Review: A Good Old Fashioned Orgy
Like cheap knockoffs of designer goods, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck's excruciating comedy bears a superficial resemblance to the pricey originals it imitates.
- Review: Point Blank
Samuel (Gilles Lellouche), a student nurse, gets sucked into a quagmire of murder and corruption when a thug kidnaps his pregnant wife, Nadia (Elena Anaya), to blackmail him into springing Hugo (Roschdy Zem), a wounded prisoner held by the police at the hospital where he works.
- Sun Araw | Ancient Romans
The hypnotic fifth LP by Sun Araw — the five-year-old solo project of Angelino Cameron Stallones — is a double-vinyl spiral through deep zones of neo-primitive psych-drone noise.
