At the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies annual awards banquet in Tucson, Arizona, last Friday, Portland Phoenix staff and freelancers were recognized for their coverage of the 2008 elections, with a second-place award, tying the City Newspaper of Rochester, New York, for the honors.

Longtime Portland Phoenix contributing writer Lance Tapley's investigation of the Maine State Prison and the state's corrections system as a whole have reached a yet wider audience with the publication of an essay by Tapley in The United States and Torture: Interrogation, Incarceration, and Abuse.

If Lord of the Flies wanted an upscale-urban bookend, it could do worse than God of Carnage (presented by the Huntington Theatre Company at the BU Theatre through February 5).
