Beerfest
If you know the guys from Paranoid Social Club, it’s not hard to believe they’d like a movie like Beerfest, full of booze jokes, scantily clad women, and scatological humor. It’s easy to picture them half-way in tears, really. But they’ve got more reason than usual to support the Broken Lizard flick, now that they’ve been included on the official soundtrack, which was released last Tuesday.

That’s right, Beerfest — debuting as the fourth-highest-grossing movie the week of August 25 and by the same guys who made Super Troopers — features the PSC tune “Wasted” quite prominently, near the end of the movie, and as the second song on the soundtrack album.

“I was down in New York with Loverless,” says manager Scott Ordway, “when I got the call they wanted to use it.” They gave him five days to get them a version of the 2002 song off Axis II that didn’t include a not-quite-permissioned sample and was “clean.” That second part wasn’t the easiest, considering the chorus, repeated many times, runs: “We all got wasted, all fucked up and wasted.”

But Jon Wyman was able to fix things, and Gateway Mastering was able to make it sound like it was never any different. “ ‘Fucked up’ is just blanked out,” Ordway says. “It’s not like a beep or anything. You can get the gist of the song without hurting anybody.”

As you might expect, being included on a disc with Willie Nelson (“Gotta Get Drunk”), Del the Funkee Homosapien (“Dr. Bombay”), and Kool and the Gang (“Jungle Boogie”) hasn’t hurt Paranoid’s national presence. Ordway reports “a pretty good push” that has resulted in several new radio stations adding Paranoid to the playlist, including Boston’s WBCN, which really ought to have helped out these New England boys a long time ago.

Less clear is what effect being so directly linked with Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” will have.
