Their utilities cut on Thanksgiving eve, wage slaves Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are huddling around the sole source of heat in their apartment — a barrel burning unpaid bills — when the lovable schlub goes down on one knee, takes the hand of his gorgeous roommate and BFF, and makes the proposal you expect from any man in an implausibly plotted film from the director of
Clerks
: “Will you have sex with me on camera for money?” Whether such a scheme makes sense in the age of free Internet porn is largely irrelevant when a comedy is this enjoyable. Kevin Smith’s ear for raunch is as piquant as ever, but he’s moved beyond his usual unconvincing leads to Judd Apatow regulars Rogen and Craig Robinson (hilarious as a race-baiting, titty-and-ass-loving producer), and his dialogue snaps more than it ever did coming out of the mouth of Ben Affleck. Sorry, Gigli.

Review: Observe and Report
Jody Hill's ambiguous and unsettling film is a comedy about law enforcement in much the same way that Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy is a comedy about comedy.
The Year of the Nerd
Barack Obama is many things. Dedicated senator. Devoted husband and father. Adept orator. President-elect. Nerd.
Observe and distort
Great filmmaker though he is, Martin Scorsese isn't the first name that comes to mind when you think about comedy genius. But Jody Hill, traces his inspiration in part back to his first viewing of Taxi Driver .

Review: Monsters Vs. Aliens
Susan Murphy (voice of Reese Witherspoon) has it all: she's about to marry the love of her life and jet off to Paris.
Hope springs infernal
Given the current economic climate, spring this year is a season more of dread than of hope for change.
Ashes of Time Redux
Ashes ’ sumptuous tapestry depicts intersecting tales in a mediæval China teeming with 20th-century angst.
I’ve Loved You So Long

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The performances never falter, and even James Horner's heavy-handed score can't dim the film's unfathomable, unshakable ending.

REVIEW: THIS MEANS WAR
| February 16, 2012
What promises to be a modern Jules and Jim (until you realize it's directed by a 43-year-old who calls himself "McG") quickly devolves into Spy vs. Spy territory, only with incompetently staged and edited action and little of that ol' Mad magazine zing.
REVIEW: THE VIRAL FACTOR
| January 17, 2012
Made for a modest budget of $17 million — and feeling like it (who needs convincing explosions in an action movie?), Dante Lam's latest still gets the job done from a run-and-gun standpoint.

Too soon? For Stephen Daldry's 9/11 drama, the right time is "never."
REVIEW: THE DIVIDE
| January 10, 2012
Many a teleplay for The Twilight Zone threatened atomic Armageddon, and though Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens nukes New York in the opening shots of his latest thriller, he finds more inspiration in the horrors of human nature as seen in the old TV show's episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."
REVIEW: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL
| December 20, 2011
Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns to the screen in dramatic fashion as new teammate Jane (Paula Patton) and the returning Benji (Simon Pegg) break him out of a Russian prison.
