Paul Weiland’s
Made of Honor
is not your usual formulaic romantic comedy: it’s stupid, its leading man is unlikable, and its jokes are unfunny and sometimes cruel. Patrick Dempsey is dreamy but unswallowable as rich, callous womanizer Tom, who relies on long-time best friend Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) for the only meaningful — but ever-platonic — female relationship he can sustain. When Hannah is called away to Scotland for six weeks Tom — can you believe it? — realizes what he’s missing. So he’s shocked when Hannah returns with the strapping, seemingly perfect Colin (Kevin McKidd) — did I mention that he’s Scottish royalty? — as her fiancé, and of course he’ll do anything to get her back. Even if that means being the maid (made?) of honor to get a chance to stop the wedding. It also means a host of Scottish-related gags and treacly deliberations from Tom and Hannah.
Made of Honor
looks sweet but is actually toxic: it’s every bit as dumb as its title.
