SEXY BUT UNINSPIRED: Rhona Mitra as Major Eden Sinclair.
Cult-favorite director Neil Marshall follows up his acclaimed post-apocalyptic
The Descent
with this graphic, bigger-budgeted mess. When in 2008 Scotland faces a viral outbreak that threatens to spread across Europe, the country is quarantined and its people left to die gruesomely. Twenty-seven years later, the “Reaper Virus” is back, and now it’s threatening England. Major Eden Sinclair (a sexy but uninspired Rhona Mitra) leads a team into Scotland to locate the barbarous survivors and find a cure; they have 48 hours to complete the mission before the virus menaces the entire planet. Marshall borrows copiously from ’80s classics like George Miller’s
Mad Max
and John Carpenter’s
Escape from New York
, outdoing them in violence and depravity, vainly yoking derivative scenes together in what becomes a two-hour nihilistic melee. At best a reminder of doomsdays past, at worst a symptom of what’s ailing the genre today.

The Descent
Few gore fests (including Hostel and Saw ) make me cringe, but this one had my stomach on edge even before the team of spelunking sports babes winds up face to face with albino cannibals two miles underground. Watch the trailer for The Descent (QuickTime)
Portishead
It’s a welcome step into new territory and a more than satisfying downer dose to set against the onset of sunny days and ice cream.
Justice
Vice like the magazine or Vice like Miami?
Banlieue 13 / District B13
Cinematographer-turned-director Pierre Morel’s breezy assemblage of acrobatics eschews the former’s dark climes in favor of a brightly lit Parisian ghetto, the better to see the amazing action.
Days of future past
Science-fiction films have been with us since Edison’s 1910 version of Frankenstein , but they bloomed in the ’Nam era, nourished by a volatile cocktail of cultural ingredients.
The girls of summer
It’s summer, so no one’s surprised at the onslaught of sequels, adaptations, or even movies based on toys. But films with Oscar-caliber women’s roles?
New to DVD: December, 20 2006
Plus the Black Dahlia and The Last Kiss .
Review: Halloween II
Rob Zombie's remake of a sequel to a film he remade begins where his previous film left off.
Space cases
Perhaps it’s something in the air, but in the last year or so it seems that Boston’s experimental outer limits has seen an analog-synthesizer renaissance.
Review: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
This third Underworld installment actually makes some sense.
'Halloween' Producer Akkad Dies in Jordan

Paul Weiland’s Made of Honor is not your usual formulaic romantic comedy: it’s stupid, its leading man is unlikable, and its jokes are unfunny and sometimes cruel.
