Over Her Dead Body
No pulse

Stars
Eva Longoria Parker and Paul Rudd
TV stars Eva Longoria Parker (
Desperate Housewives
) and Lake Bell (
Boston Legal
) find life after TV in this beyond-the-grave rom-com. Longoria Parker’s Kate is an angel from Hell (an ice sculpture crushed her at her own wedding) channeled by Bell’s perky psychic, Ashley. Kate doesn’t want Ashley to get involved with Henry (Paul Rudd), Kate’s former fiancé, and a celestial cat fight of sorts breaks out. Kate can’t lay a wing on Ashley, but she can jabber incessantly and deprive her — and us — of sleep. The two actresses are game for whatever comic potential might come their way, and there are in fact some witty twists, but Jeff Lowell’s direction has an embalming effect. The relationship between Henry and Kate, meanwhile, has no pulse at all, and Jason Biggs as a gay man inept in the kitchen is as funny as a heart attack.

Primary concerns
The last thing people are looking for when they go to the movies is a reminder of the political crapola they are trying to escape.

Hail and farewell
The OC name-checked Michiko Kakutani and Julius Rosenberg; one character read Shirley Hazzard’s The Great Fire and another had a poster for Imitation of Life .
Review: The Invention of Lying
In the world of this debut effort from Ricky Gervais, there are no movies. There’s only Lecture Films, a studio that produces pictures in which actors read from accounts of historical events.
Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour in Disney Digital 3-D
TV force, tweener pop star, and daughter of country-music icon Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus gets the concert-tour-movie treatment, in 3-D no less.
37. John Mayer
You know your stock has fallen when the Star , that bastion of serious journalism, claims that Jennifer Aniston broke up with you because you Twitter too damn much. That’s what Mayer gets for relentlessly spewing nonsense in 140-characters-or-less bursts. And let this be a lesson to all you 40404-fiends: if you’re gonna tell a lady you’re “too busy,” make sure you’re not simultaneously thumbing shit like “ Life is like walking through a funhouse. It’s dark, people are pushing, and you can’t turn around ” onto the Internet. Not just because it’s pathetic. Because she’s following you, dickweed.
Our Don Drapers, Ourselves
This Sunday is the premiere of the third season of Mad Men (AMC, 10 pm), the Emmy-winning show that made fans of good television have to figure out where AMC was on their basic-cable schedules.
Review: Sex and the City 2
Where does your 1998–2004 HBO hit series about sex and the single girl go when three of your four girls are no longer single? How about the United Arab Emirates?
Review: I Love You, Beth Cooper
Hayden Panettiere provokes many emotions as the title object of desire in Chris Columbus's dreadful teen romance. Love is not one of them.
The big hurt: Hello, goodbye
I should probably explain that this is not the same David Thorpe who recently resigned from a different local newspaper where he wrote a beloved weekly column very, very much like this one.
Review: Hannah Montana: The Movie
Okay, I'll admit it: I'm a sucker for Miley Cyrus and her Hannah Montana TV persona.

REVIEW: UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING
| January 24, 2012
The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE
| January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

Jolie has loosely reworked the story of Romeo and Juliet in an infamous setting familiar from CNN but here seen from the inside.
REVIEW: ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED
| December 13, 2011
For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
REVIEW: TRESPASS
| October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
