CELEBRATING LIVE MUSIC: Last year's Portland Phoenix Best Music Poll awards show brought
together people from all over the club scene. It'll happen again in May, so keep your calendar clear.
Portland’s club scene is diverse enough to be almost confusing. Depending on what you like, there’s a pretty good choice of places to go to see and hear live music. Here’s a beginners' guide to where to find musicians — often local ones — playing your favorite types of tunes. (All of the below are in downtown Portland, unless specifically noted.) See our weekly listings and club directory for specific details on what’s happening where, and when.

Get ready for summer, punks
What has already been an active year on the local scene only ramps up for summer.
Decontrolling the price of punk
This article originally appeared in the October 13, 1981 issue of the Boston Phoenix.
Hot Water Music
If nothing else, it’s a reminder that two guitars playing the same power chords isn’t always a bad thing.
Miraculous?
“Miracle on Tremont Street" offered a reminder that modern rock isn’t completely dominated by watered-down emo-pop pap and heinous post-grunge mush.
Covering Dylan
Dylan is his own cover band.
Punk's Not Dead
Wasn’t punk about being independent?
So wrong they're Righteous
Less than two years into their existence, the Self-Righteous Brothers already have a press kit worth of raves.
True believers
Luke Pritchard may look a bit like a shaggy dog with his lips curled in a mock Jagger pout. But it’s no pose.
Erin McKeown
With Madeleine Peyroux and Norah Jones as ingrained in the cultural fabric as cockroaches in an Allston student flat, there isn’t much refreshing about yet another pop singer’s taking a whack at a few pages in the Great American Songbook.
The Big Hurt: Pied-pipers lead innocent teens to emo cult Valhalla!
As a connoisseur and frequent purveyor of shitty journalism, I have to applaud the Mail for its tremendous gusto.
Portland scene report: August 4, 2006
Longtime Portland music-scene staples John and Ally Althoff seemed to have a good multi-generational thing going with the White Heart.
