Cynicism aside, there are some terrific bands from this era playing tonight, too. THE CIMARRON PROJECT are an Afro-Cuban ensemble of six deeply entrenched NYC musicians. Unlike a lot of extra-US sounds, Cimarron are more of a dance participatory event than a sit-back-and-marvel thing. An opening act by Nigerian chieftain and Museum of African Culture director OSCAR MOKEME makes this one tough to miss. 9 pm, $10 at SPACE Gallery, 538 Congress St., 207.828.5600.
