BEST MUSIC POLL
Best Pop-Rock Act in Portland
After two wins in the Best Indie Act category, Phantom Buffalo earn their first Bimpy in a different, loosely-defined category. Consider it a tribute to the band's sprawl: that dexterous rhythm section; Tim Burns's subtle, pedal-driven turns of phrase; and Jonny Balzano-Brookes's trademark falsetto, lovingly cooing over the psych-inflected pop stew. Portland may not have seen an album from the band since 2008's long-delayed Take to the Trees, but we still happily eat up their buffet of memorable anthems. Earlier this year, Phantom Buffalo did something few local bands could, or should: they made the play-your-album-front-to-back gimmick (with their debut source material, Shishimumu) into an essential night of concertgoing. This is a band that take their time, yes, but our patience has always been rewarded by local classics.
