It's been a big year for the Wells-based rapper. Spose — a/k/a Ryan Peters — has ballooned to hometown-hero status, uniting the whole state around his carefree stoner persona. The success of his tongue-in-cheek single "I'm Awesome," including heavy rotation on WCYY and Q97.9, led to a February deal with Universal Republic Records and then a slot on American Top 40. Since signing, Spose has been hard at work playing shows across the country and recording his major-label debut, due out sometime this summer. Yet through it all, the humble Mainer has vowed to stay true to the state. The music video for "I'm Awesome" was filmed in Wells — part of it at the same place he played his first show — with his friends, fans, and neighbors cast as extras. What lies ahead is unsure — many Portland bands have faltered even with the support of a major label. But with fierce freestyle skill and a flow he has been honing since he was 14 years old, Spose's talent should ensure he sticks around.
