Bedouin Soundclash

bmp_soundclash

It’s no secret that “world music” is a copout label for miscellaneous bands who are hard to define and don’t find a comfortable home in any other category. That would be especially true of Bedouin Soundclash, the Toronto rhythm section who look like a passive indie-rock trio, jam like a nine-piece reggae band, and sound like . . . let me get back to you. In further proof that their sometimes-ska, sometimes-monster-ballad-esque range knows no limits, remaining members Jay Malinowski and Eon Sinclair (drummer Pat Pengelly left the band earlier this year) are reported to be working with former Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer on a special-project follow-up to their 2007 (Canadian and European) chart topper Street Gospels (Side One Dummy). Come to think of it, maybe “world music” does have a working definition: fresh international rhythms that mainstream Americans are incapable of digesting.
