Best Live Act in Portland

Rustic Overtones

By the horns

Maine's favorite sons pulled an unsurprising win in this category. The seven-piece, horn-heavy, rock-funk-jazz act put on a rollicking good show; their reunion concerts in 2007 drew thousands of enthusiastic fans, thrilled to see their favorite band back after a five-year hiatus. Since that year's release of Light at the End (Velour), Rustic have toured the Northeast, putting on polished, danceable live shows. Along the way, they began work on a "feature film documentary" (hopefully there'll be good live-concert footage in there, if it ever happens), replaced keyboard player and vocalist Spencer Albee with Nigel Hall, and lent their horn section to several shows with hometown hero Ray LaMontagne. Drummer Tony McNaboe says RO are approximately 75 percent done with their "first full record of brand new material in about eight years ... It's been a massive overhaul and has been in the works for almost two years now." Plus there's some mysterious "concert event" in the works. And damn, are those boys excited about the new Mexican joint on York Street. |
