2009 Best Music Poll Winners

Best Category-Defying or Indie Outsider Act and Best Female Vocalist in Portland

By Blood Alone + Melynda Amann (Cruella), By Blood Alone

Double Trouble

With their first-ever wins, and the first double win resulting from a write-in campaign, By Blood Alone and frontwoman Cruella (a/k/a Melynda Amann) have reached the goal they aimed for in an April post on their MySpace page: to "correct" the "glaring oversight" of their omission from this year's Best Music Poll ballot. So let's just say it: We stand corrected. BBA's music and blog posts declare that their power is as strong as ever — in fact, possibly more so. This is obviously helped by the fact that Cruella appears (knock on wood) to have beaten the breast cancer that took much of her energy for 2007 and the first part of last year; she has now returned with her rich, searching vocals to lead By Blood Alone on new adventures. The future looks bright, given all the progressive- and symphonic-rock fans statewide — and even worldwide — who helped carry them to victory. In true BBA fashion, though, their campaign was altruistic: They name-dropped 11 other bands in the course of their publicity effort. Four of those won big, too. |
