Newton shooter aims to please
Run and gun
If a Jamaican bobsled team can qualify for the Winter Olympics, then certainly a gunslinger from liberal Newton has a fighting chance in a rigorous shootout below the Mason-Dixon Line.

Going for Gold Glossary
Jump Starts
The Summer Olympics are fairly easy to comprehend for the average couch tuber: people running, hoisting, swimming in synch — all fairly quotidian activities.

Burn, baby, burn
The Olympics, zipper-gate, stimulus money, and why Coakley must investigate City Hall
The Phoenix opposed President Barack Obama's efforts to help Chicago win the 2016 Summer Olympics on the grounds that doing business with the International Olympic Committee is always bad news for the host community.

Disclosure: not a dirty word
Menino's shame and Kerry's blunder. Plus, Olympic follies.
The City Hall e-mail scandal that has scored headlines in recent weeks exemplifies Mayor Thomas Menino's antagonistic — almost contemptuous — attitude toward public accountability.

The Olympic (shell) games
There are billions of reasons why every debt-saddled American should hope that the US does not get the gold in 2016.
It’s been 13 years since the pageantry and spectacle of the Summer Olympic Games — and the mythical economic boon that goes with it — has graced US soil. But we’ll find out next week if, in a secret-ballot vote in Europe, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will award the 2016 Games to Chicago, the American city competing for the bid.

RISD's hope-less situation
Outrage over the Alswang 'Resignation.' Plus, too many sad passings
On August 3 it was announced by the Rhode Island School of Design that Hope Alswang had resigned as the director of the RISD Museum. Those who have followed the coverage of this story may be somewhat confused by the revelation that absolutely everyone acknowledged that Alswang was a superlative museum director and that absolutely no one involved in the arts scene at RISD or in the state of Vo Dilun thinks that she voluntarily "resigned." It was said that she loved the job, and the vague announcement that Alswang left to "pursue other opportunities" sounds as suspicious as elected officials dropping out of election campaigns to "spend more time with their families."

Photos: Beijing Snapshots
Starbucks, Celtics jerseys . . . where are we again?
I should have known that a country that vehemently denied SARS and tried to poison our pets and children might be a little less than forthcoming about the asinine, algae-scented shitshow that is the 2008 Olympics.

China, Tibet, and the Olympics
Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman explains the Dalai Lama’s political wisdom, the myopia of the Chinese, and the essence of the Olympics
It is difficult to imagine an American — perhaps any Westerner — with a greater sympathy for, and understanding of, Tibet than scholar-activist Robert Thurman.

The spirit of the chairman haunts the Beijing Olympics
When the 21st century is old enough to support a sense of historical perspective, the date 8/8/08 may well be more significant than 9/11.
