Everybody must get Stone(henge)d

At America's Stonehenge, you can snowshoe your way, by candlelight, through thousands of years of archaeological history. But first, you'll have to pass by some alpacas.
When I went to Stonehenge in the UK last year, it was hard to get a picture of just the rocks without some tourist being in your frame. After a couple of minutes waiting in line, I just wanted to be done with it, post the pictures on Facebook, and officially say I'd been there.

Mitt's best week ever

Romney's presidential quest is looking better than ever - no thanks to his own campaign
The quadrennial farce known as the Ames Straw Poll has once again made its mark on the race for the Republican presidential nomination — by rewarding the candidate smart enough to avoid it.

Cruelty, compassion, and a capuchin, a decade later

The baby in the box
I had tried not to look at the monkey's tits — the result, Janet told me later, of a glandular disorder. They bounced whenever the monkey moved. If you shaved them, they would have been a pretty nice set.

Painting – and video – of the American landscape

Manifest destiny
"Painting the American Vision" — 45 rapturous paintings from the New York Historical Society — surveys the Hudson River School painters, dubbed for the upstate New York river where they spent their summers prospecting for sights to transform into ravishing canvases in their Manhattan studios each winter.

Whatever happened to Danville's giant mystery monkey?

Unfinished (monkey) business
The giant monkey of Danville was my symbol, back then, of the fin-de-siècle nadir in media fluffery, thankfully obsolesced in one grim morning.

Gamers gather for retro glory in New Hampshire

Cathode-ray dreams
A person prone to dumbass assumptions might have confused this past weekend's 13th annual International Classic Video Game Tournament with a four-day-long exercise in retro-fetishism.

Anyone but Mitt

Romney vs. the GOP
Political leaders don't always rally around the front-runner for their party's presidential nomination, but they normally at least offer deference and respect. That doesn't, however, seem to be the case with Mitt Romney.

Eternal Earth-Bound Pets

Interview: Eternal Earth-Bound Pets founder Bart Centre

Because there’s no doggie door to Heaven
Pets — no matter how cuddly — lack souls. While their pious masters are frolicking with Jesus, loyal puppies, adorable kitties, and stalwart goldfish will find themselves alone in a terrifying hell on Earth.

Romney rides again

To win the GOP nomination, Mitt will need to do things differently this time. Here's how.
Mitt Romney has been running for president more or less nonstop for the past seven years — and still hasn't figured out how to do it.

New Hampshire GOP politics

Choosing sides

New Hampshire's GOP operatives have lined up for the 2012 primary, and are ready to do battle
Over the next two weeks, New Hampshire will quietly transform into a proving ground for the Republican 2012 race to recapture the White House. At least 10 potential candidates, from heavyweights like Mitt Romney to obscurities like Fred Karger, are scheduled to visit this month.

Bachmann overdrive

Turn off the dark
Standing in the parking lot moments before the Michele Bachmann fundraising brunch on Saturday, my guts seized up as miasmatic gusts shot from the revolving doors of the Nashua Courtyard Marriott. A sepulchral mist of Lovecraftian horror seemed to rise from the hotel.
