Letters to the Phoenix editor, July 2, 2010
My religion teaches me that I have a responsibility to work to create a better world for humanity and for all living beings in the world that God created.

Holy war
How an unholy alliance of Catholics, Mormons, and evangelicals seeks to control our lives
And so it came to pass, Roman Catholics, Mormons, and evangelical Protestants have banded together to battle, well, the rest of us — the heathens, the godless liberals, the Hitchens-reading progressives.

Review: 8: The Mormon Proposition
Sheds a sad light on Prop 8
While we were getting decriminalized weed in Massachusetts, a large segment of the population was reeling from the devastating passage of Proposition 8 in California.

More than Mormons
The big love that dare not speak its name
Despite the comparably juicy family dysfunction it offers, Big Love hasn't achieved the iconic status of its HBO predecessor The Sopranos . Maybe viewers relate better to the mob than to Mormons.

Glenn Beck's Mormon ties
Letters to the Boston editor, October 30, 2009
Thank you for carefully illustrating the intellectual dishonesty of the right wing’s number-one glory boy.

Latter day taint
How Glenn Beck is driven by Mormonism — and why his fellow faithful (including Mitt Romney) should be worried
Fifteen years ago, Glenn Beck was a small-market DJ with a drinking problem, no friends, and bleak professional prospects. Today, he’s a Fox News superstar averaging 2.4 million viewers, an inexorably successful author, and the leader of a popular movement that condemns government in general and President Barack Obama in particular.

41. Warren Jeffs
LATTER DAY TAINT
Jeffs, the creepy leader of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is a grade-A shitbird — he reportedly described Hurricane Katrina as an answer to his prayers — and so nobody was surprised when he was finally convicted, in 2007, of being an accessory to child rape. (That case also exposed a hideous loophole in the Arizona laws against incest — they only apply to those over 18.) That should’ve been the end of the road, except that according to a recent Salt Lake Tribune story, Jeff’s diaries indicate that he’s retained a hold over his followers from jail. To be continued? We hope not.

Was it all a dream?
EXCLUSIVE: Mitt Romney claims that his father marched with MLK, but the record says otherwise
The Phoenix can find no evidence that the senior Romney actually marched with King, nor anything in the public record suggesting that he ever claimed to do so.

The passion of the candidate
Romney’s religion speech was aimed at Christian conservatives, but his model wasn’t JFK — it was Mel Gibson
Pity Mitt Romney, the object of religious persecution, forced to make a public speech confronting the antagonistic forces that have kept his candidacy down by attacking his faith.

Mitt’s thorny threesome
How will a trio of new media developments affect the Romney presidential campaign?
Whatever Mitt Romney is doing in a few years, he’ll always have the Summer of ’07.

Mitt's equity army
Romney’s war chest is overflowing with the contributions of his financial-world pals. But what is the price of their loyalty?
The predictions coming out of Ames, Iowa, hold that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is expected to win this weekend’s closely watched straw poll.

A new army of atheists is taking no prisoners in its battle with God and his self-appointed faith dealers
There’s no doubt about it: right now, God is on the side of the atheists.

Feeding the rabid right
If Mitt Romney can’t persuade conservatives that he’s one of them, his hopes are dead. But convincing them could be fatal too.
Mitt Romney’s attempt to follow George W. Bush’s formula to the Republican presidential nomination has hit a snag.

The GOP’s tin ear
Republican silence in the face of attacks on the first Muslim congressman speaks volumes. Plus, Deval Patrick misses a “teachable moment.”
Anyone still wondering whether the GOP has lost touch with the electorate can find more evidence in the controversy over newly elected congressman Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the United States Congress.

Romney's first draft
The Massachusetts media could play a big role in shaping Mitt’s ’08 bid — or close to none at all
If a few recent incidents are any indication, Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, widely viewed as a likely Republican presidential hopeful in 2008, is quite concerned about the hometown press.
