Planned Parenthood moves into Davis Square

Safe sex just got a little easier for women in Cambridge and Somerville, who won’t have to go quite as far for birth control, emergency contraception, or testing for pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. Responding to a state Department of Public Health survey that identified the two communities as among the top four in need of more-accessible reproductive-health-care services, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) opened the doors on Thursday to Plan, a new express center in Davis Square. Six employees will staff the center, which is taking over the space recently vacated by Buck-A-Book. For more extensive health services and procedures, women will still be referred to the much larger Boston clinic in Allston-Brighton, on Comm Ave.

Express centers began popping up nationally about three years ago, and they fit perfectly with Planned Parenthood’s prevention goals, says PPLM chief executive officer Dianne Luby. “One of the best ways to get people who are sexually active to use contraception is if it’s convenient and accessible.”
