Lewiston's Ghosthunter are generally classified as "punk," but their songs often veer into doomy sludge-rock reminiscent of bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep. The hard hitting quartet (vocalist Jason St. Onge, guitarist Kevin St. Onge, drummer Eric Rancourt, and the bassist known only as Sam of Thunder) have spent the last couple years building a solid fan following, bolstered by the release of the Billy Anderson-produced Viking Daze EP and the recent Big City Nights (currently available for free download atwww.gimmesound.com/Ghosthunter, courtesy of the Entertainment Experiment). Their live shows are bombastic to say the least. Extreme volume is a top priority, an element their albums capture well. These guys rock hard, and their diverse approach to songwriting guarantees something for every kind of rocker to get behind. Rounding out the night were sets from noise-rockers Antiseptic and death-metal heroes Shabti.

With a name like a throwback to a "parental advisory" era that today seems charmingly nostalgic, Haverhill, Massachusetts's Motherf@#kers Be Trippin' (special characters theirs) were like an open-top Jeep cruising the promenade of riotous rock and roll.

The first time SPACE Gallery closed off a chunk of Congress Street, in 2005, they filled it with sod grass and turned it into an urban lawn. The second, a year later, inflated plastic structures dotted the Arts District. This Saturday — in theme, in spirit, and in execution — they do it again by throwing a good old fashioned Block Party.
