Portland scene report: October 17, 2008

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  October 16, 2008

A note from TWISTED ROOTS’ ADAM POWERS: “When Twisted Roots formed in 1989 there was only one venue in town that would play all-original hard rock or punk rock music: GENO’S... It took us over a year to convince KRIS CLARK to give us a show at ZOOTZ on a Wednesday night. There was the TREE playing mostly early alt-country and national underground music, but pretty much everywhere else was covers.” The “Sibilance” staff wonders if that’s the way we’re headed right now.

That new riff-rock band, BURNT ORANGE, featuring a slew of local heavy-rock vets, have changed their name to SUN GODS IN EXILE, possibly honoring a 1979 piece of science fiction that purports to have discovered people descended from aliens. Also, RACHEL HENTHORN (LEAD STILLETO) had joined the band as a second singer. No word on whether she’s descended from aliens.

We already told you the October 18 show at the Station with ALIAS GRACE would be their last. One more reason to go: Free disc for everyone who shows.

UMaine-Farmington student DAVID KERSCHNER is working on a history of Maine’s punk-rock scene, circa 1976 to 1986. If you’ve got any knowledge you’d like to drop, e-mail him at david.kerschner@maine.edu.

The BRILLIANT MISTAKES, pop-rockers driven by piano and featuring Maine native ERIK PHILBROOK and Bowdoin grad ALAN WALKER, are set to release Distant Drumming, a follow-up to 2003’s Dumb Luck. The album drops this week, but they’ve yet to set a Maine gig. Look for something at the Empire or Big Easy.
