MILEY CYRUS, BREAKOUT

Some records are bold and unconfusing statements of purpose — but in the world of teen pop, hindsight has often shown that what at first seemed like frothy shallow little ditties are desperately coded missives from a sad soul wailing behind a wall of synthetic beats and chilled hearts. When Ms. Cyrus, on her oh-so-inappropriate cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” sings, “My father yells/‘Whatcha gonna do with your life?’,” you can hear a world-weary terror at odds with the cut-loose pillow fight of the original. In Miley’s rendition of the title line, there’s a difference between wanting to have fun and actually
having
it. Glossed to a shine by the same crew behind No Doubt’s
Tragic Kingdom
,
Breakout
is a puzzling mishmash that makes sense only if you read between the lines and see the 15-year-old trapped in a machine that is partly of her own design. If you can get over the flagrant missteps (the less said about “Wake Up America,” the better), there’s some pretty rad stuff here. “Fly on the Wall” is a metallic Stefani-sassing electro-slamming plea for privacy — a bratty, defiant, and bizarre middle finger to the world that created her. Someday, one hopes, Ms. Cyrus and her therapists will go back and analyze this platter and everything will make much more sense.

The Big Hurt: Broken bones and stripper poles
Only a few weeks ago, I was making fun of Aerosmith for their inability to present Aerosmith in their Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Presents Aerosmith tour.

BRITNEY SPEARS is being sued for $10 million by the company that helped her score a fragrance deal with Elizabeth Arden. It's claiming that she owes it a 35 percent commission on the sales of her popular scents. This boosts my self-esteem a little — say what you will about my fragrance, at least it's never been actionable.

The good news: the 2006 drug charges against Lil Wayne have been dropped after a judge ruled that the search leading to his arrest wasn't proper.

Review: Hannah Montana: The Movie
Okay, I'll admit it: I'm a sucker for Miley Cyrus and her Hannah Montana TV persona.

The Big Hurt: Say anything
It’s almost impossible to read a single page of YouTube comments without being confronted by society’s ugliest afflictions: ignorance, pointless fights, horrifying racism, and unfair criticism of Justin Bieber’s haircut.

THE CULT SURVIVES ROCK'S HIGHS AND LOWS
| May 31, 2012
There is a difference between an unknown musical artist and a superstar, and that difference isn't necessarily musical — it's mythological.
RAZORMAZE ADDS FOCUS TO THEIR THRASH
| May 15, 2012
For a kind-of goofy metal dude, Alex Citrone is pretty serious — especially when he talks metal, and especially when he's talking about his band, Boston shred titans Razormaze.
ZAMBRI | HOUSE OF BAASA
| May 15, 2012
For those of us of a certain age who remember when school dances had a strict four-fast-songs-then-one-slow-one policy, the memory of bouncing around to "Let's Hear It for the Boy" with the anticipation of "One More Night" or "Take My Breath Away" still makes our palms sweat with hormonal anxiety.
CONFRONTING THE SWEDISH GLOOM OF IN SOLITUDE
| May 08, 2012
When I am finally able to get through to the cell phone of In Solitude's tour manager, they have emerged from a massive dust cloud, their metal-mobile finding civilization after a long spell traversing the deserts of Arizona with no idea where they are going.
[R.I.P.] ADAM YAUCH AND THE BEASTIE BOYS
| May 08, 2012
ADAM YAUCH, a/k/a MCA, was likely inspired to pen those words, that appear in a tossed off couplet in the middle of what would wind up being one of the band’s final singles, by his immersion in the world of illness.
