Arborea make it up as they go along

Though 2006’s Wayfaring Summer was certainly a pretty disc, full of acoustic instruments and soft-sung vocals, it would have been a mistake to use it to peg Arborea, comprising husband-and-wife team Buck and Shanti Curran, as a folk outfit. In some ways, their methodology shares more with grind-core types like Ocean or free-jazz groups like Mystic Out-Bop Review than with Simon and Garfunkel. For their self-titled debut disc with Philadelphia’s Fire Museum Records, Arborea explore sounds, reveling as much in harmony as discord, and offer up soundscapes sometimes rich, sometimes barren. Everything about the album, even the sepia-toned cover image of the Currans amid a late-fall and barren landscape, speaks to stripping things down to their essences.
“Black Mountain Road” seems to actually open with a recording played backward, the lyrics unintelligible and the whup-whup of the tape sounding like wind in the ears. Then the tune switches to forward and a pretty banjo is joined by Shanti’s even prettier voice, begging you to “follow me to the hollow tree” and daring you to refuse.
Buck sings, too, and does well with the gloomy “Dark Horse,” his banjo in a repeating riff: “Send me a dark horse/I will ride swiftly/over the mountains/down to the sea.” He has a chanting sort of voice, just above spoken, and the tune would go great with any number of young adult fantasy-type books where elves or other fantastical creatures sing odes to days gone by.
There are times here where Buck seems to just be noodling through a warm-up, and you get the feeling that they could write some terrific stuff that would improve with additional takes and tracks, but this disc is genuinely fresh and immediate and well worth repeated listens.

- Fully Bully
Somewhat quietly, Doug Cowan’s band, Bullyclub, has stuck around long enough to become one of the Portland scene’s elder statesmen.
- Seeing Sparks
Those hardcore fans among you already have much of Eyes to the Sun in your collection. Sparks the Rescue have been selling nine of these 12 songs on a disc they've brought to shows and mailed out from time to time.
- Sophomore effort
As our popular society gets more complicated and faster paced, Local Nothing, among the best of a slew of young bands to come out of the Saco/Thorton Academy area, seem almost quaint for their blitzkrieg guitars and shouted vocals.
- Must be Marie
I’ve always loved Sydney Bourke’s contribution to Satellite Lot’s Second Summer album, and it’s great to see a band built around her excellent lead vocals with the indie-pop Marie Stella.
- Waiting for the Sun
Ganging up on the Sun gets caught between adventurous and jones-fulfilling and feels like an album in search of an identity.
- Making history
Lost on Liftoff have plans to release their debut album on Labor Day Records later this month. When they do, I’ll make sure to remind you that frontman Walt Craven is now on his third wildly popular Portland band.
- Letters to the Portland Editor, March 31, 2006:
Your article painted most venue staffs as being ill-prepared to handle the magnitude of a Vertigod show, and I strongly disagree.
- Creature feature
While much of Clara Berry’s new EP, Creature , is alluring and captivating, the first 45 seconds of her “Siren” might be the best 45 seconds recorded this year.
- Turkish troubadours
I owe just about all my Turkish music knowledge to Okbari.
- Piano man
If you haven’t heard from Kevin Roper lately, maybe it’s because he was busy getting married.
- Portland scene report: January 19, 2007
Here it comes again: The Wire , down in Portsmouth, is yet again sponsoring the RPM CHALLENGE, which asks bands to sack up and record an entire album all in the month of February (10 songs or 35 minutes, whichever comes first).
