Music seen at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge, May 2, 2008
By SONYA TOMLINSON | May 7, 2008
Do you know what the Number One single was the day you were born? America’s “Sister Golden Hair” was mine. Not a terribly memorable tune. More like the kind of song you would hear playing on a classic-rock station at Goodwill. But in 1983, Bonnie Tyler topped the charts with the unforgettable “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and you would be hard pressed to find someone who wasn’t familiar with the opening lyrics, “Turn around bright eyes,” or the crescendo of the chorus. Not a single person on the Bubba’s dance floor this past Friday was at a loss for dance steps, lip-synching skills or improv acting moves when resident DJ Jon threw on this classic as the last song of the night.
Whether you’re into the nostalgia of the era or not, checking out ’80s night at least once is worth the entertainment value. Bubba’s setting couldn’t be more ideal, most in attendance are dressed up, people run to the dance floor as if in junior high when a song they love comes on, and more than anything people are having genuine fun. It’s also refreshing to see the continued success of a Portland dance night that by the looks of the large crowd never gets old, in more ways than one.
Every Friday | Bubba’s Sulky Lounge, 92 Portland St | 9 pm

Let's face it — it's hot, we're poor, and we're lucky to be stealing our neighbor's wireless. When you can't muster the energy to go out in these dog days of summer you can go to the best attended venue not only in Portland, but worldwide: the Internet.
