The Whigs began life as a guitar/bass/drums college band toiling away in Athens. The band’s self-released debut, which was loaded with no-nonsense frat rock, was hailed by
Rolling Stone
even as the songs begged to be trimmed and punched up. On their second album, the Whigs have lost a member but have made great leaps forward, even as their bar-band impulses continue to feel comfortably old-fashioned. The 11 songs here clock in at a tidy 37 minutes — plenty of time to flavor the straight-ahead rock jolts with spaced-out country-rock ballads and pop-flavored rave-up replete with a horn section. Lead singer Parker Gispert has an everyday voice that doesn’t call attention to itself. But the real hero is drummer Julian Dorio, who shows off monster chops beginning with the infectious stomp of “Right Hand on My Heart.”

The Whigs
Not every band needs politics. But name your band the Whigs and you kinda do, along with, if not brimstone, at least some fire.
2008 Listravaganza!
We are not at all sick of bands with animal names yet and seem to have a soft spot for Erykah Badu that we kept very hush about all year.
Beyond the White Stripes
There’s a blues and old-school R&B resurgence rumbling in the indie-music underground, and it goes well beyond the icky thump of the White Stripes.
Chromeo
It’s no surprise that their sweet sophomore-sleeper-turned-instant-classic is being reissued with extras.
Turn the beat around
I do a lot of thinking about music. Coincidentally or not, I have a lot of friends who don’t, but get a kick out of the fact that I do.
Soul men
Classic soul music’s timelessness has come again.
Guest lists
What small, private lists like this remind us is that big, honking institutional lists are largely fictions, mirages of a consensus that no longer exists, if it ever really did in the first place.
Bettye’s business
The battles of a blues belter
Roots of spring
Homegrown recordings from Boston and beyond
Something for everybody
As that great philosopher Brian Wilson once observed, summer means fun.
