Portland scene report: December 21, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  December 19, 2007

As the EMPIRE gets its feet under it (did anybody check out the LONG LOST BLUEGRASS BAND last Monday, with RON CODY, ERICA BROWN, MATT SHIPMAN, and STEVE ROY? Whoo-boy), there’s talk of yet another new club on Congress at the STADIUM. Maybe MATT DAY will be booking it?

CAMERON MYERS, once the singer for SABRETOOTH NUDIST, has returned healthy from a kidney transplant of all things to put together a Doors tribute act, BACK DOORS, which will debut at the Big Easy, December 21, with TIM EMERY (the MCCARTHYS) on guitar, FLASH ALLEN on the all-important keys (SHADOWPLAY), TIM MYERS (GROOVE DISCIPLES) on drums, TODD FISKE (BAND BEYOND DESCRIPTION) on bass, and DARREN WHITNEY (SLY-CHI) on sax. MARC RUBENSTEIN, who used to do the oil light shows at the Fillmore East, will handle lights. Touch us, baby!

Be on the lookout for WWW.MAINEFOLKMUSIC.COM, a new project by singer/songwriter/writer BOB MCKILLOP that’s going to launch with content January 16. It’s going to have show listings, interviews, tunes to listen to, etc., all geared around the Maine folk scene (uh, obviously). If you’re looking for a local folk clearinghouse, check it out.
