Wussy’s 2005 debut,
Funeral Dress
(also Shake It), was loved wherever it was reviewed, but it wasn’t reviewed much — perhaps in part because its melodic, country-tinged rock was the result of a musical pairing as unlikely as peanut butter and pickles. Old, high-voiced singer and guitarist Chuck Cleaver made his name in the early ’90s fronting major-label casualties the Ass Ponys; young, mid-range singer and guitarist Lisa Walker made her name outside Cincinnati only by hooking up with Cleaver for this project. The pair divided the words and vocals evenly, yet Cleaver’s experience united it all. Now, we’re told, this one-off union has become a life partnership. Walker provides the lyrics and lead vocals for eight of the 12 songs here, sometimes down-tuning her guitar to reach parts of Lohio (an Ass Ponys album title) beyond her partner’s sense of rural dystopia, recalling everything from the anti–Lilith Fair drone of Columbus’s Scrawl to the sexual high drama of Cincinnati’s Afghan Whigs. (Former Whig John Curley produces.) All around Southern Ohio, Walker notices Jesus hanging from the “Killer Trees,” Cleaver sees youngsters driving “God’s Camaro,” and the bedroom’s crowded by “you and me and what’s-his-name.” And despite the travails, it’s all further proof that the “Trail of Sadness” is best traveled in pairs.

How low can you go?
"Turn down the bass!" a well-meaning fan finally yelled last Saturday night, about a half-hour into Murder by Death's sold-out performance downstairs at the Middle East.
The good fight
The Cold War’s first recording doesn’t sound like anything on the Providence music scene, which is curious.
Solid foundation
When Big Tall Buildings guitarist Jared Mann sent in a disc of six demos earlier this year, the raw potential behind songs "Natalie" and "Something with a Semicolon" had me dropping monthly emails on him with the subject header "WHERE'S THE ALBUM?"
Rock and role
Greg Dulli may wear his tender heart on his suave, stylish sleeve, but it’s just bait — a lure for unwitting romantics who enjoy having their hearts broken. Slideshow: Twilight Singers at Avalon, November 14, 2006
Voices carry
Stephen Malkmus never sounds like anyone other than Stephen Malkmus.
Alex Chilton, 1950 - 2010
When Alex Chilton had a fatal heart attack while mowing his lawn last week, he was, statistically speaking, just a 59-year-old New Orleans resident, nothing more than an edit on some census forms. What Chilton represented, however, was a true American iconoclastic hero.

CALL IT A COMEBACK

Alabama offspring Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley have been making raucous rock and roll together in one band or another for the past 23 years, about the same time it takes most offspring to grow up and get real jobs.
