Stars
The Dixie Chicks loved Dan Wilson so much, they asked him to compose five songs on their 2006 album, one of which was the single “The Long Way Around.” Sony savior Rick Rubin loved Dan Wilson so much, he signed him to his American imprint, writing in a press release, “There exists a purity and honesty in his work that is few and far between in today’s music.” Commoner fans of Dan Wilson remember his classy and classic ’90s band Semisonic, and before that Trip Shakespeare. Whatever his guise, Wilson writes homespun songs that pull at the heart with deep hooks and engaging melodies. He’s a singer-songwriter of the ’70s school, relying on equal parts intimacy and harmony to connect. “You’ve got all the sugar you’ll ever need,” he sings on “Sugar” (where he’s joined by yet another admirer, Sheryl Crow), and that’s the menu for

. The songs are sturdy enough, evoking classic Neil Young and post-Byrds Roger McGuinn, but given Wilson’s tremulous voice and sweet song titles, it sometimes seems he’s singing to a kindergarten class. And then on “Baby Doll,” “Golden Girl,” “Honey Please,” and “Come Home Angel,” he seems to be in the running for “sweetest guy alive.” It’s as if he were trying to impress mom while keeping the kids at bay.

Neil comes to Fenway
First song: “Sweet Caroline”— that Fenway anthem that booms throughout the park in the middle of every eighth inning. An hour later, Diamond played the thing again “for anyone who came late to the show.” And then, one more time .
Write to life
The Weakerthans’ story-songs are as much poetry as lyrics, the sort that get written only after verses choked by fastidious drama are thrown away.
Rough magic
The cupboards of Irish dramaturgy are crammed with ghosts.
Cooking with Joe
Some rock stars travel with personal chefs. Joe Perry brings a grill — a Weber.
War and peace
More often than not, when an artist gets airplay covering a decades-old song, it’s out of desperation — the sign of a career on its way down.
Having more fun
By the time Car Wheels on a Gravel Road came out, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, and Tom Petty had all recorded Williams’s songs.
Weather reports
One of the great themes in America is nostalgia for the "good old days," which flame into being and then fade into the distance.
By the Grace of Ralph
As debut records go, it's rare to find one as textured and fully realized as what Marion Grace have put together in the 10-song Lying Down Looking Up , an arty, smart, folk-rock affair that shows songwriting creativity with some genuinely great ideas.
